Motorcycle School - How to Pass a Driver's License Test
The completion of a motorcycle training course can often eliminate the necessity of taking the driver's test. The course will teach you to anticipate the movements of other drivers and keep a safe distance behind them and safely ride to your level.
The training includes both instruction in the classroom and hands-on riding. Make sure you arrive on time since tardy arrivals may throw off the class' schedule.
Classroom Instruction
Whether you're brand new to riding or just need to improve your skills, the MSF Basic Rider Course (BRC) is for you. This course provides instruction in the classroom and actual training for motorcycle/scooter operators in a controlled off-street setting. The BRC is designed for beginner riders and will help you avoid MVC's road test. It teaches street strategies including how to brake efficiently and navigate in tight spaces, how you can change lanes, and pass without causing any hazards.
The five-hour ePackage 1 (eP1) is an eCourse that can be taken as a stand-alone course or as a pre-requisite to the hands-on portion of the complete BRC. The eCourse includes videos, interactive lessons and graphics that will help you experience the fundamentals of motorcycling. Insurance discounts could be available to you upon successful completion of the course.
To receive a course completion card and to take part in the riding skills assessment, the ePackage 1 (eP1) must be completed within 30 days of the BRC course start date. If the eCourse cannot be completed, no refund will be provided. Participants must have an active driver's license to participate in the BRC.
The CLASS program is a two-day riding class that allows you to further develop your riding skills a safe and secure riding setting on a street legal scooter or motorcycle supplied by the school. The class is taught to you by MSF certified instructors. The focus is on building your confidence and skills as well as a better understanding of the operating system of your scooter or motorcycle. The class consists of classes along with riding exercises and a riding-skills evaluation.
The course is based upon the wisdom of three time AMA Superbike Champ Reg Pridmore and his hand selected team of instructors. Their philosophies are the result of more than 50 years of racing and riding, as well as teaching. These ideas are presented in a simple language so that they are simple to grasp and apply. The result is a confident, skilled and safer rider.
Practice Range
You'll spend a significant part of your motorcycle training in a practice area, where you can practice and test your riding abilities. The range is usually closed to traffic, so you can practice in safety. Your RiderCoach will walk you through the fundamental control and procedures of your bike before taking you out on the range. At the end of every session on the range your RiderCoach will evaluate you on five skill evaluation exercises that cover limited-space maneuvers, braking and cornering. If you successfully get through the riding-skills evaluation, you will receive an BRC Road Test Waiver Completion Card (a license waiver).
You must bring your motorcycle safety equipment to class. Your RiderCoach can provide helmets for students who don't already have one. However, make sure to wear a DOT approved helmet. Also, wear long pants that are non-flare material, a full-fingered gloves, over-the-ankle boots or shoes and eye protection.
In the course of the motorcycle safety course you'll likely spend approximately five hours in the classroom absorbing the basics of your motorcycle and its operation prior to when you go out for a ride around the range. When you arrive the instructor will help you improve your riding skills by teaching you straight-line riding as well as turning and shifting before gradually moving on to more complicated techniques, such as emergency brakes and swerving. The course will conclude with a final riding-skill evaluation and you'll be awarded the certificate of completion and could be eligible for a discount on your motorcycle insurance.
In several states, a motorcycle safety class is required in order to get an endorsement. Check with your local DMV to determine if the course or recommendation is required. The MSF Basic RiderCourse can be taken at a variety of locations across the United States. The course combines 5 hours of classroom training and 10 hours on a bike. It is the quickest method of obtaining a motorcycle licence and may also be eligible for insurance discounts.
Feedback from Instructors
"The instructors were extremely professional and knowledgeable. They truly take care of their students, and it shows. They will teach you all of the basics that you must know about riding a motorbike. I highly recommend this course to any rider of any age or experience."
The instruction in the classroom was insightful and thought-provoking. The instructor feedback was the highlight of the riding instruction. They did not just say "OK", they told you exactly what you did wrong, for instance, "You were looking down at the handlebars" or "You did not give it enough gas" or "Your wrists were bent" or "You changed gears too early" or "You were not pushing down on the foot peg". They then showed you how to fix the issue.

This kind of personal coaching is what you can expect in a quality training course and is what differentiates this course from other classes. Some riders might think this is harsh however in my opinion it's necessary to give students the best chance of passing the test and remaining safe on the bike.
I've taken other courses in the past, and there was no personal feedback from the instructor. If a student doesn't pose a clear danger or hindering the progress of other students in the class There's no reason that instructors should have the final say on whether or not a student has passed the course.
My opinion is that any motorcycle school that doesn't provide individualized coaching is missing a key aspect of its curriculum and isn't worthy of the praise it receives in student reviews. The Basic RiderCourse and continuing with private lessons is the best way to get started and running safely and quickly. You can learn from an expert to avoid making mistakes and start riding with confidence and skills that you can use for the rest of your life. The majority of states waive the written and riding license endorsement tests for those who have completed a certified RiderCourse, and some insurance companies offer discounts for those who successfully complete a course.
Final Exam
In the second part of your class, you will learn about road skills, such as stopping, accelerating, changing gears, turning, and swerving. This portion of the course lasts until you are able to successfully pass a riding skills test. This portion of the class will determine whether you'll be granted a motorcycle license waiver card. The test will include the maneuvers that a DMV driver's examiner will be looking for during the driver's license exam. The test isn't easy and if you fail to pass it's not an end in itself. Be prepared to take it again the next time around and keep working hard.
If you pass the exam, your instructor will give you a course completion certificate which you can use to obtain an insurance discount for motorcycles. You are now a certified motorcyclist and can legally operate your bike on the street.
The MSF 3-wheel BRC is a research-based and action-oriented core curriculum designed to teach beginning 3-wheel motorcyclists of all ages the physical and mental abilities required to safely ride on the streets.
